To the leaders of Europe and the World,
We, representatives of global civil society, political refugees, democratic activists, and advocates for peace and human rights, address you with urgent concern.
With deep apprehension, we observe the upcoming meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, scheduled for the end of this week in Alaska. We fear that this meeting could result in a tactical short-term agreement that may cause irreparable damage to Ukraine, Europe and international security. Alaska 2025 must not become Munich 1938, nor Yalta 1945 !
Our concerns include the possibility of concluding a deal that would legitimize Russia’s illegal occupation of Ukrainian territories and recomposition of 1991 borders by force. We are also worried about the potential easing or lifting of sanctions against Putin’s regime, allowing its return to international forums such as the G7, and participation in sports and cultural events, which would only serve to legitimize Putin’s dictatorship. Additionally, we fear unprecedented pressure on Ukraine to force it into acceptance of an imposed and unfair agreement, and Putin’s international campaign to support this disgraceful deal.
We urge you, the leaders of European nations and the global community, to ensure that no agreements are made without the direct participation and consent of Ukraine and Europe. It is crucial not to recognize or support any decisions that could bring to the legitimization of illegal occupation following a brutal aggression by Putin’s regime. We must maintain and strengthen sanctions against the Russian regime until there is a complete cessation of aggression, liberation of occupied territories, release of all political prisoners and Ukrainian civilian and military captives, and those responsible are brought to justice. Furthermore, we must prevent Russia’s return to international organizations and events until it fulfills its obligations under international law.
We propose establishing a strong European Democracy Shield with capacities to protect democratic values and institutions across Europe. Strengthening European defense cooperation is also essential to ensure collective security and deter potential aggressors. Increasing international solidarity with the Coalition of the Willing will support nations resisting authoritarianism and aggression. We particularly call upon Brazil, India, China, Australia and Canada to refrain from supporting the Alaska deal and to uphold international law and justice, and build a fair peace.
Any “deal” built on unfair concessions to the aggressor will not bring lasting peace. It will only perpetuate impunity and set a dangerous precedent for the world, threatening our common global interests and security.
We call on you to demonstrate firmness and principle. Only a united and uncompromising stance by the global community in defense of international law and justice can halt further escalation and continue the struggle for peace and justice.
