On November 30, 2023, the Supreme Court of Russia ruled in favor of the Ministry of Justice and declared the non-existent 'International LGBT Movement' an extremist organization.
According to the Court, the so-called “LGBT Movement” constitutes a destructive ideological mechanism that influences citizens, allegedly posing a threat to the demographic situation in Russia and aiming to “undermine fundamental Russian spiritual and moral values.”
Legal experts at the Memorial Center warn that the Supreme Court’s decision could have dire consequences, potentially leading to criminal charges and convictions for hundreds, if not thousands, of individuals.
This is part of an ongoing campaign by Russian authorities against the LGBTQ+ community. In its statement, the Memorial Center Council noted that this decision shares the same goal as the previously adopted law prohibiting so-called “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations and gender transition.” Both measures are intended not only to suppress LGBTQ+ civil activism in Russia but also to erase lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people from public life.
The Memorial Center expresses its solidarity with those advocating for LGBTQ+ rights in Russia and remains committed to providing every possible form of legal support.
