In 2014, following an inspection by the Ministry of Justice, the Memorial Human Rights Center was added to the “foreign agents” registry. At the end of 2021, the Moscow City Court, in response to a lawsuit filed by the prosecutor’s office, liquidated the organization for several technical violations of “foreign agent” legislation. Soon after, supporters of the dissolved HRC established the Memorial Human Rights Protection Center, which in March 2024 was also designated a “foreign agent.”
Additionally, in recent years the Ministry of Justice has entered several other Memorial organizations and our colleagues into the “foreign agents” registry: Oleg Orlov, Svetlana Gannushkina, Alexander Cherkasov, Grigory Vaipan, Anastasia Garina, Natalia Sekretareva, Violetta Fitsner, Denis Shedov, Irina Shcherbakova, Anna Karetikova, Sergey Krivenko, Robert Latypov, Alexandra Polivanova, Yan Rachinsky, Nikita Sokolov, Sergey Stepanov, Mikhail Chimarov, Elena Zhemkova.
